In a recent interview, Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa State, emphasized Nigeria's wealth and its ability to pay any minimum wage amount. This statement comes as labour leaders and the federal government negotiate the country's minimum wage.

According to Lamido, the government's prioritization of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, worth N17 trillion, over the minimum wage demonstrates Nigeria's financial capability. He argues that if the government can embark on such a massive project without following due process, it means Nigeria has the money to pay any reasonable minimum wage.

Lamido's statement echoes the sentiments of organized labour, which initially demanded a minimum wage of N494,000, later reduced to N250,000. However, the government has offered N62,000, a proposal rejected by labour leaders.
